How to Manage Uneven Skin Tones on Dark Skin Types

Don't think that discoloration and uneven skin tones can't happen to you? The melanin might help you to stay away from wrinkles but it doesn't act as a barrier against hyperpigmentation. Having uneven skin can be terribly stressful believe me I know, regardless when it happens.. you will realize that it is challenging to remedy. So here are a few tips that you can use to manage uneven skin and get you out of that gloom.

Tip 1 : Apply sunscreen EVERYDAY !
Sunscreen is always an essential in our skincare routine. Although people with darker skin tones are less prone to sunburn but over time, you will notice photo-damage and hyperpigmentation that will build up on your face, which will result in an uneven complexion. And not to mention, long term exposure to UV light will speed up your skin aging process. So it's a MUST for everyone to apply sunscreen before you step out of the house. Also FYI moisturizer with SPF ingredients will not be sufficient to battle the UV rays outdoors.

Recommendations: Sunscreens that don't give your skin a white cast after application, Murad City Skin Age Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 PA++++ and Shiseido Perfect UV Protector SPF 50+ PA++++ WetForce HydroFresh.

Tip 2 : Vitamin C
Vitamin C is great for the skin for so many reasons and one of it is to even out the skin tone. Products high in Vitamin C will act as a powerful antioxidant, skin-lightening and barrier to protect the skin from environmental stressors, which includes free radicals, UVA damange and Blue Light from all our electronic devices.

Recommendations : REN Ready Steady Glow AHA Tonic, Murad City Skin Overnight Detox Moisturizer.

Tip 3 : Retinol
Try products that contain Retinol, a Vitamin A ingredient that is powerful enough to improve overall skin texture, pigmentation and tone. Retinol works by exfoliating your skin, promoting your skin renewal cycle at a more profound level which is from deep inside, instead of just merely the surface of your skin. But do bare in mind that Retinol might cause breakouts on certain skin types and redness if you have sensitive skin. Also you need to wait for 4 to 6 weeks for the Retinol to really work. So stick with it for at least that long to see the benefits.

Recommendations : Murad Retinol Youth Renewal Night Cream, IndeedLabs Retinol Reface Skin Resurfacer & Wrinkle Repair.

Tip 4 : Treat Your Acne Early
Always treat your acne early and never pick on them. It is known that acne scars is another example of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation which leads to uneven skin tones.

Recommendations: PAIR Acne Cream, Mario Badescu Drying Lotion

Tip 5 : Consult a dermatologist that understands your darker skin tone
If you are really desperate in getting rid of your uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation, don't just enter a clinic and look for laser treatment to take care of it. Laser treatment might work for light skin because it targets the dark spots but if you already have darker skin, the laser can't actually target the dark spot accurately. In fact, it might make it even worst. So it's best to consult a dermatologist that truly understands darker skin tones before you decide to venture into any aesthetic treatment.

Anyways, for any immediate cover up of the uneven skin, you can always slap on some foundation and concealer, and trust me no one will notice at all !
