Shangri-La KL has always been known for it's 5-star experience and one cannot be an authority on lazy luxurious afternoons without at least sampling their afternoon tea set once, so we thought it was a good time to give it a go . And it was surprisingly disappointing... Why ? Scroll down to find out...

Afternoon Tea @ Lobby Lounge, Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur (Review)

The afternoon tea was served at the Lobby Lounge of the hotel which had a warm and comfy setting but needed refurbishment. Also the tea selection by Zesta was ample without being overwhelming. the menu includes Black Tea infused with Osmanthus flower, Blueberry and Pomegranate, Kenilworth Estate, Lychee, Oolong, Peach, Tie Guan Yin, Waltrim Estate and the classic Chamomile, Darjeeling, Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Green Tea with Jasmine and more. Now let's look at the servings by tier.

Savouries
Tuna Roll Sandwich with Wasabi Mayo
Smoked Duck on Rye Sandwich Skewer
Avacado with Shrimp Cocktail Salad in Choux Puff
Wood Smoked Salmon Tartar in Cone

We ordered one afternoon tea set where we had 4 different sandwiches to be shared among two. The sandwiches look nice and simple but it was evident that they were made hours or probably overnight since the bread was not the freshest. First of all, the Tuna Roll's seaweed was soft and chewy, Salmon Tartar's cone was no where near to crispy, just soggy. Then the Avacado with Shrimp in Choux Puff had the hardest and raw avocado slice I have ever tasted. Just when you think maybe the Smoked Duck Sandwich is good as it's simple to get right but sadly The slices of duck were cold and flavourless.

Sweet Delights
Mont Blanc
Raspberry Cheese Cake
Pure Caraibe Chocolate and Orange Melange
Granny Smith Apple Crostata
Hazelnut Ginduja Macaraon
Apricot Butter Sable

Sweets consisted of a variety of tarts and cookies. All were very crumbly and taste below average than expected but looked deceivingly  pretty and homely. We couldn't even hold the Apricot Butter Sable proper because it just crumbled into pieces, same goes to the Mont Blanc and Apple Crostata. I'm not sure if they were not served warm or if it had cooled down by the time we started eating. It was soft and crumbly. The Pure Caraibe Chocolate and Orange Melange looked and tasted exactly like those moist chocolate cakes bought from the night market, nothing fancy about it. As for the macaron, it was probably the only thing that was flavourful among all the sweets but still it's crust was quite hard to bite through.

Classic Delicatessen Scones
Classic Scones and Sultana Raisin Scones with
Strawberry, Apricot Jam and Mascarpone Cream

Scones were nicely baked golden brown but quite inconsistent in terms of flavour and texture. Both the raisin and plain scones had a different flavour as well as texture, one was baked to perfection, the other was cakey, dense and bland. I am not sure whether both of the scones were made in the same oven or if it was made by a different chef. It was very inconsistent.

Other than the 3 tiers, the afternoon tea set also comes with Tropical Fruits like watermelon, honeydew, papaya, pineapple and assorted berries. The selection was varied but in term of freshness, it was quite disappointing as we spotted some mould on the berries, which is not the kind of thing we expect to see from Shangri-La's 5-star standard. Anyhow, the service crew immediately replaced it with a brand new plate and some warm and freshly baked scones.

In case you were wondering, this new batch of scones were as inconsistent as the previous two scones we had. Some were surprisingly nice and sweet, while others are just bland and cakey. I'm just not sure how to rate the scones...

Overall, the service was friendly and on point. As for the rest terribly disappointing  for a 5-star hotel. Without a complete overhaul, the afternoon tea experience at Shangri - La KL is not worth your time
