Have you seen the latest QWSTION Autumn/Winter 2016 collection ? Not sure about you, but we do adore the latest collection especially when each bag offers different carrying options whether you like to handcarry sling, or even use it as a backpack. This All-In-One carrying option definitely up the game of functional and fashionable elements in a bag design. So it was a pleasure for Small N Hot to have the opportunity to interview Mr. Sebastian Kruit, co-founder of QWSTION, to know more about the story behind QWSTION.
Sebastian Kruit talks about the functional and fashionable QWSTION bags
What motivated you to start QWSTION?
The QWSTION story started in 2008, when I joined forces with the creative dynamic of Swiss industrial designers Christian Kaegi and Fabrice Aeberhard, graphic designer Matthias Graf and Hannes Schoenegger. We had all been searching for a bag that closes the gap between functional sports bags and elegant fashion bags.
As nothing on the market could satisfy our needs, we founded our brand in the former industrial district of Zurich, Switzerland. The Swiss modernist design heritage has influenced our collection, and continuous development and improvement are our focus.
What were some of the obstacles early on in your career?
As a start-up brand, you can't always develop fabrics and make the details exactly as you want. This was difficult and we understood it was a process rather than perfection. We went along with the natural cycle of development of the brand and we can do now much more than we could in the beginning. There is always a shortage of manpower, money, contact with suppliers and clients. But we were very motivated and believed in our concept and never went from it, we developed consistently the direction.
Who are the designer behind the unique pieces that we see in QWSTION ?
One of the co-founders is Christian Kaegi, our creative director. He is there since the beginning shaping the product concept, and with his industrial design background, he looks in a different way than a fashion designer.
Also, our art director Matthias Graf has given his best since the beginning creating a strong visual concept which was executed in our photography, graphic design and every artwork you see from the brand.
What’s been your “I’ve made it” moment?
I think we have seen some great moments, being nominated for Swiss design awards but also feedback from consumers telling us how they use and like our products.
Just celebrating these small highlights is a continuous process and motivating us to not settle but push forward. We are still a small brand with a strong focus.
We notice your designs are very classic and neutral. Do you have any plan to have a line with more pop for the fashionistas out there?
The designs in the classic range are our `classics`. We are working with collaborations with fashion designers such as Hiuber Egloff and in ss17 with Julian Ziegerli and go more wild with patterns and designs.
We do not see us as a fashion brand and our colors are earth tones rather than flashy.
Do you have any advice for those who would like to venture into the fashion/clothing world?
It's important to have a strong concept and believe in the concept and stay true to it, despite the fact that so many people tell you otherwise.
Its moving consistently in the same direction whilst growing the details, and do it all with passion and having fun along the way.
Besides this its important to have consistent and motivated partners like we have in many countries and of course in Malaysia and be as much of support as possible, as all countries are different and have a different stage of development. It is walking the path together.
